AEGs have been the dominating platform fueling the airsoft world's weapons. GBBRs in the late 2000s made a respectable effort, but expensive and unreliable mags and cold weather problems made them fall to the AEG. Now in the early 2010s HPA is on the rise (especially here at P98). I don't think it will dent the AEG market too much as buying a Polar Star or building your own is very expensive. If these guns become more affordable in future years, we may finally see a budge in the AEG market. Quite simply, AEGs are outdated and unreliable but there's no clear way out yet. My gearbox is a peach with 40,000 rounds on it with only a couple minor repairs. Some people break down at 2,000 rounds and that's nothing compared to the hundreds of thousands of rounds you can run through an HPA with nothing more than an O-ring replacement. What do you guys think of the AEG market? |

Only time will tell. The AEG market will stay strong with beginners, but with more experienced players it isn't so clear. I think that the AEG will eventually fall when HPA systems come more affordable. Now for my own personal thoughts. Right now the cost of a HPA system is equal to two very nice AEG's, and I won't be using that system any time soon. My mind set is that I'll be using AEG's for a very long time, or at least until they stop making quality replacement parts. I might break down and buy a GBBR, HPA's probably not. Or one day I'll see the light and invest in HPA...but that's unlikely. It's 2012 and I don't have texting and I just got rid of dialup two months ago...I'm kinda old school

Polar98 (SSD and Penguin with SCARs and Me and Karma with M4s) jumped on the GBBR market very quickly, but its easy to have some problems. We all have had cold weather problems. CO2 mags minimize but don't eliminate this completely. Internally GBBRs are fairly reliable. Myself and Penguin have had internal issues with ours already. SSD left his old mags in the car and they leaked until getting new O-rings. Karma had generic issues with his M4 early, but has been running strong since. Even if GBBRs have had increased reliability, we've all had some sort of problems with ours. I'm building an HPA system to replace my 5 year old M16 which averages $150 a year in repair costs. I have some short term money for the project. It'll slowly pay for itself over the years (6.5 years of repairs) and I'll enjoy the customized rate of fire, fire selector, and FPS. I'll probably have to do some minor upkeep on it, but otherwise it should run strong. |

Ive had more luck with cheap AEG's than I have had with my expensive ones. I paid just shy of $400 for a Socom Noveske and it broke just after warranty. I spent 400 plus more for all the best upgrades and parts and have had feed issues. On Saturday I went to field it for the first time at an event and something broke in the trigger or selector switch. Previously I had only fired practice shots which I wasnt happy with so I put an Angel Custom tight bore barrel in it and was happy with the result. At this point I am ready to dump the gearbox and drop in a polarstar fusion engine and be done with it. i wish I had done that instead of everything else I did. Nothing like having a $1000 gun that doesnt work. I have been running a Pstar since they first came out and I must say I am as happy as a clam and have no complaints. Other than midcaps that cant keep up with my rate of fire. :-) |

The more expensive AEG's I've had work very well for a long time with no problems, but then after a while it seems like when one part breaks, it causes a chain reaction of breakings. My CA has worked prefectly for about 8 or so years, but then my hop up broke...then my piston got stripped...and now maybe my spring is broken too... |

It's more of a matter of usage than age with gearboxes. If I let my gun sit for 20 years I'll be able to brag that my gun has lasted for 25 years. My first Systema gearbox lasted 2.5 years which was a bit less than expected, but worse yet it only had 17k rounds on it. Hopefully the P-Star will be as good as it sounds. |

I think AEG's will quickly disappear as soon as a cheaper, more reliable system comes out that uses far less parts and a simple power supply. (NOT HPA) For now AEG's will remain dominate and will be still for years to come. I may invest in a WE M14 over the summer because I've always wanted the realism of GBBR. Just the amount of parts that can't be made reliable on them without making the price of the gun ridiculous isn't worth it. |
| It's not the Acid attacks. Honor killings. Beheadings. School bombings. Hostage taking. Corrupt checkpoints. Religious violence between factions. Institutionalized corruption. Corporal punishment. Slavery of women. Or even the widely practiced recreational homosexuality. You all can hold hands while you skip down Chaos Lane for all I f*cking care. But when your civilization sucker punches my civilization, I aint gonna leave nothin left of your way of life but a cloud of dust... Ask the Japanese. | |
