I do not remember the election of 1996, in fact I hardly remember the Clinton presidency. It wasn't until I was in first grade in 1999 that I learned who the president was. (And I now realize how easily I could have been politically influenced at this young of age. I never should have been bothered when my parents asked "What did you learn in school today"?) Fortunately academia's philosophy is starkly different than mine meaning that I had impartial teachers or their efforts simply failed to make much of a difference. I remember election day 2000, Bush vs Gore. That's when I got to thinking about government for the first time. It was no big deal but it just seemed interesting as to how it worked and how it can effect so many people so much that they go and passionately support certain leaders. I threw myself into the political waters in 2004 when I announced an endorsement for President Bush to my 6th grade class in the fall. I had a lot of respect for the president and it the couple years later I became know as the guy who likes Bush. (See "I" on the chart for my positioning at this time) Taking a look at "I" you will noticed a fairly moderate conservative. Your classic establishment Republican. I didn't know much at this time so with more knowledge, of course my views would change and those that didn't might change in magnitude. "II" represents 2008. Some years went by of course, but I still stood by the president in having my approval. I will have you know that I disagreed with Bush on many things but it was mostly the war on terror and the '01, '03 tax cuts that caused me to express satisfaction with the president. I endorsed Fred Thompson, a quite conservative candidate, for president back then but agreed to support John McCain when he won the nomination. It was amid the shift of focus from foreign policy and social issues over to economic issues that led to a revolutionizing of my ideology. Through research and reasoning amid the financial meltdown I took a position further right; one which favors, low taxes, free markets, reduced red tape, smaller government, and adherence to the constitution. In 2009 I was around "III". I remained with my classic positions on social issues but this year was another big year for expanding my knowledge. This is a time when I struggled to simply find happiness with my life and my dissatisfaction with so many things only increased my enthusiasm. I might not think the same way had I not lived through this time. 2010 denoted as "IV" was the year of the Tea Party. The major congressional gains that Americans enthusiastically gave to people with a new, more constitutionalist vision. This is when I joined the grassroots and left the establishment. The move to the right was small, almost negligible at this point. It was the moved downwards that demands attention. My traditional social views somehow changed. Did I abandon my morals? Did I begin living a more liberal lifestyle? Did my IQ drop to that of a normal teenager with respect to politics? No! None of these things happened. I continued living my life just as conservatively and still do live a pretty conservative lifestyle (Work hard, am religious, value family and tradition, etc). I realized a very important thing that caused significant moderating of my social positions. That tolerating a practice does not mean and endorsement of that practice. 2011 blew by and I swung back up and then back down on my social views just showing how unable I was to come to terms to the conclusions of 2010. There are still a couple issues or so that I still believe are so essential society but as a big states rights guy I pass the ball to them. What keeps me above the x axis is some continuing military views as well as views that I suppress in government but believe at heart. It's actually a very similar situation as Ron Paul. In the 2012 election, I endorsed Herman Cain early on and then couldn't decide how to support later. It's a wonder why I didn't go for Ron Paul. While I currently have strong libertarian leanings, I can not say I'm more libertarian than conservative. I don't yet support closing all overseas military bases and dismantling our nukes. And now for some intelligent discussion from Stossel: http://youtu.be/Nauh6A5HOtg Edited by Nova, Dec 7 2012, 04:28 PM.

Well then you wrote a book and released that. When was all this happening? P.S.- My political views seems to be at II or III on your chart I think. Edited by surfer, Dec 7 2012, 07:16 PM.

I first got the idea to write up my thoughts when I wrote a 26 page discussion of economics, civil issues, religion, and science between Oct an Dec 2010. In March 2012 I decided to rewrite it. I started from scratch and toss the civil, religion, and science parts and focused almost exclusively on economics. The end result was a 36 page book published July 3, 2012. In October 2012 a second version of the book was released that included a couple additions and a page that states the copyright and ISBN-13 (was not required but I did it anyways). |
